Das Symbol der beiden Werkzeuge Hammer und Sichel in gekreuzter Form (Unicode: „☭“, russisch: серп и мо́лот – serp i mólot, wörtlich „Sichel und Hammer“) gilt neben dem roten Stern und der roten Fahne als das bekannteste und verbreitetste Symbol des Kommunismus, insbesondere der diversen marxistisch-leninistischen Strömungen. Die diktatorisch regierenden kommunistischen Staatsparteien in China, Vietnam und Laos verwenden gekreuzte Hammer und Sichel weiterhin als ihr Parteisymbol, die Staatspartei Nordkoreas verwendet ein davon abgewandeltes Parteizeichen. In der heute bekannten kommunistischen Form wurden gekreuzte Hammer und Sichel erstmals von der bolschewistischen Einparteiendiktatur unter Wladimir Lenin im Jahr 1918[1] als Staatssymbol des neugegründeten Sowjetstaates eingeführt.
