From the very beginning, the legal situation on the Polish-Belarusian border has been changing literally every few months. After the 2023 parliamentary elections, many people in Poland hoped for an improvement in the situation, but in reality, it has only gotten worse with each passing month. At this point, the rhetoric of almost every political party is tinged with xenophobia and racism, creating an atmosphere of fear.

Operating in conditions of constant crisis is obviously a challenge. Perhaps the most pressing issue is always raising funds. We do not receive any subsidies from state institutions or corporations; we rely on public fundraising, donations from people who support us, and international financial support networks that operate in accordance with our values. 

Szpila is a small anti-repression collective, but since its inception, we have never had time to get bored. Although there are currently fewer arrests than in 2020 and 2021, both of our hotlines are still active. Today, in addition to continuing to support the LGBTQ+ community and women’s rights, we also help many other collectives and social movements, including squatters, tenant movements, anti-fascist movements, students fighting for their rights at universities, people working for justice for Palestine, people working for refugees, and climate movements.
