[IT] Da qualche giorno, abbiamo aggiunto un software lato server per far sì che tutti i file multimediali caricati su noblogs vengano automaticamente ripuliti dai metadati. Ciò è utile per rendere difficile trarre conclusioni su chi abbia creato e/o modificato i file. Per eliminare i metadati utilizziamo il programma mat2, software libre pacchettizzato per Debian.

Questa funzionalità è automaticamente attiva per tutti i blog su Noblogs, e riguarda l’upload di qualsiasi tipo di file, con l’unica eccezione dei video: per una limitazione del meccanismo, non possiamo automaticamente ripulire i metadati dai video.

Importante: è molto meglio e più sicuro installare ed eseguire il programma mat2 sul proprio computer, e ripulire i file prima dell’upload su questo o altri siti, così imparate a farlo e non delegate, ma in ogni caso ci è sembrato interessante offrire questa opzione automatica come protezione in extremis in caso di dimenticanze. Tra l’altro se usate Debian 12 trovate il software necessario già installato di default con l’installazione desktop Gnome 3 ed una apposita interfaccia grafica.

Abbiamo configurato il servizio in modo da eliminare automaticamente i file originali, solo la versione “ripulita” rimane sui server. La dimensione dei file caricabili su Noblogs rimane limitata a 50 MB. Non c’è nessun cambiamento nell’interfaccia di upload, il plugin funziona in modo completamente trasparente.

  No, non sarebbe comunque particolarmente efficace dato che i file in questione sono già stati pubblicamente disponibili per del tempo nella loro forma potenzialmente non editata.

[EN] A few days ago, we have enabled functionality to automatically remove metadata from files when they are uploaded to blogs on this site. Metadata removal is useful to make it harder to extract information on who might have created or edited these files. The implementation uses the mat2 software, which is also packaged in Debian.

This functionality is automatically enabled for all blogs, and it is applied to all files types with the exception of video: due to limitations of our implementation we can’t cleanup metadata for video files.

Remember that it is much better and safer to clean up files on your own computer, before you upload them on this site or anywhere else! We think of this functionality as an in extremis defense against potential mishaps. By the way, in Debian 12 the necessary software comes already installed with the Gnome 3 desktop environment, with a nice graphical interface…

We’ve configured the service to immediately remove the original files, so that only the edited version is permanently stored on the servers. The maximum uploadable file size remains limited to 50MB. There is no change in the file upload interface, the plugin works transparently.
